This herb has been used for centuries as a digestive aid and as an antifungal it does have some anti-inflammatory properties and immunomodulating properties as well. It works so well because it is a bitter and the taste buds on the tongue have bitter receptors that act on the TAS2R16 receptor which traditionally humans evolved to have this receptor as a protective mechanism to prevent the ingestion of toxic substances but when bitters react with this receptor in places like the gut, liver, or the pancreas it stimulates a healthy digestion by increasing digestive secretions which helps to better absorb nutrients from the food. The secretion of digestive enzymes due to the ingestion of a bitter is the way the body  protects itself, by secreting digestive enzymes to breakdown the potentially toxic substance however these herbs have become very useful in treating digestive issues because of their bitter properties.
